Operating Deflection Shape

An Operating Deflection Shape or ODS is an advanced multi-channel, cross-phase method of tracking deflection globally of many points on a machine. The testing points can be in the hundred’s sometimes even into the thousands. A 3-D model is then built using MEscope software. The data is imported into the software and data-linked to each point. The powerful benefit to ODS is a machine is then animated at any frequency of concern in a 3D model. Models can be built in sections allowing you to remove layers of components exposing the anomalies of each part. The following anomalies are all causes that can be seen with an ODS model.

  • Unbalance

  • Misalignment

  • Foot related problems

  • Inadequate support Frame or base

  • Excessive Flexure

  • Eccentricity

  • Electromagnetically-induced problems

  • Loose anchor bolts

  • Definition of the amplitude or amount of motion present

  • Resonant responses of machines, support frames/bases, piping, duct work, walls, floors, columns, etc.
